As business owners, we all get that in order to make it in this business, we need customers. And in order to find customers, we need a following.
While this post is about how to build a following, this is really about building a community. We want a tribe — a group of people will love us **EVEN if they don’t pay us!!**
This is not about growing a following fast. There are no quick fixes or 5 steps to overnight success.
One of our good friends, Jelisa of Social Pop Co is someone who does this so incredibly well. And it reminded us, that while some people rock at this (i.e. Social Pop Co.), it doesn’t come naturally to everyone! So here we are: Our tips and advice on how to grow your following organically.
Adding value is all about giving. It displays your expertise in the area and brings you to the forefront of people’s thoughts. But it also creates gratefulness!
A great way to understand this is to think about who you LOVE to follow. What are the reasons you love to follow them?
They probably have really binge-able content — whether it’s blogs, podcasts, YouTube, social media, etc — and a brand that draws you in! Like for us, Social Pop Co. is one of our favorite platforms to binge when it comes to social media! Their resources are so good, so it keeps us coming back again and again! (Check them out here and here to see some of their work for yourself!)
When it comes to your business and brand, you want to have the same — a LOT of content to consume that is valuable to your audience. If you want to build a tribe, you have to give, give, give and then give some more.
You’ve probably heard this before when it comes to social media: it’s all about consistency. But you also want to make sure when you’re showing up, you’re adding value!
1. Create your list of brand topics, schedule these across a 90 day period (very brief descriptions), then post/plan however you prefer – daily, weekly, monthly. You can use Trello, google calendar, a paper calendar — whatever works for you!
Then, you’ll have a bird’s eye view of everything you’re talking about. You’ll be able to see how much time you spend promoting or talking about each of your “brand” topics. And it will save you a TON of time at planning content in the process.
2. Make sure to look for the questions that your audience is asking for. Not sure what they’re looking for? Ask them!! If you have even 5 followers, then yes, you have a following.
3. (This one might be our favorite.) Choose the platforms according to where your audience lives (& ditch the rest)!! You don’t need to be doing EVERYTHING! Focus on what is working for you. You can always revisit other platforms in the future.
4. Comment and engage with your community! This is huge. If you’re asking others to engage with you, make sure you’re engaging back! This will go a long way with building trust with your audience.
You might be wondering, this is all well and good, but how do we find the TIME to create this “binge-able” content and to nurture my community? We’ll be honest, it’s not a quick fix! Building a tribe and community as a whole is a process, but slow growth is STILL growth. The key is consistency. To keep showing up over and over again.
Have Quirks! Like Jenna Kutcher‘s mac & cheese – it has nothing to do with her service, but her followers (us included) think of her whenever they think of mac & cheese! It creates a feeling of friendship and deeper relationship.
“But I’m boring!” Okay, let’s just kick that one in the butt, right now. I know we all think this about ourselves, but we promise you, you are not.
How do you know what quirks you have? Think of your daily habits & routines, things that get you ridiculously excited, things you do/eat/think about EVERY day. Create a list of all the things that make you, YOU.
It’s important to keep in mind, these quirks don’t need to be anything extraordinary! (To you, it probably isn’t because it’s your normal!) It could be the smallest, most mundane thing, but we promise, inviting your tribe into it will create connection.
Along with your quirks, it can go a long way to share your vulnerabilities. We think Instagram is moving in a direction where people care much more about seeing REAL, authentic lives than pretty, curated ones. Especially if you’re the face of your business, consider sharing some of those real, un-curated, messy parts of your life!
Not sure it makes a big difference? Pay attention to the people you follow who do share their vulnerabilities — whether it’s body image, anxiety, imposter syndrome, you name it! Often, those are the posts that perform the BEST.
And isn’t that what we’re all craving? Human to human connection? This is potentially one of the most valuable things you can do for your audience — share your humanness, invite them into your everyday, messy life and make them feel a little more real in the process.
Want more help in planning content, mastering social media, etc? We highly recommend Social Pop Co. — whether it’s just to binge all their content or outsource your social media to them!
