In our last post about opt ins, we talked about what opt ins are and what purpose they serve. In this post, we’ll talk about what kinds of content you can use for opt ins!
Because, if you’re like we’ve been (and if you haven’t checked out one of our biz besties Vanessa Ryan), we used to be totally in the dark about WHAT to even give away, aside from workbooks.
Pin me to Read Later!
First of all, it’s SUPER important that your opt in content has some super high quality content. Just because you’re giving it away for “free” does not mean it shouldn’t be awesome content!
And raise your hand if you’ve ever been totally psyched to download something, only to find out that it’s really not helpful in the least. How do you then feel about that person’s quality of work? Do you trust them to over deliver when you book with them, or only skim by, know what I mean?
As we mentioned in the last post, an opt in is very often the first commitment that a reader/listener/customer makes to you. They’re giving you their email on faith, and hoping that you give them something useful in return. Friend, don’t squander that trust!!
You don’t necessarily need to spend a million hours making an awesome opt in from scratch, however.
The first category of opt in is a piece of something you’ve already made, possibly even something you’re already selling!
These kinds of opt ins are AMAZING because they not only provide a ton of value, but they gets people familiar with the product that you’re selling without feeling all pushy and salesy.
Free trials feel generous, and being generous builds trust.

Along the same lines of using a part of something you sell, is reusing a great piece of content that you already know is high-converting.
If you have a really great blog post, webinar, or Facebook/Instagram live, you can package that into an opt in that provides a ton of value to people. Our friend Vanessa has an AMAZING podcast episode/blog post about how exactly you can repurpose an Insta/FB Live and we highly suggest that you check it out here!
The best thing about repurposing something is that you already know the kind of response is gets from people. If you want to guarantee that your opt in engages people, teaches them something, and grows your relationship with them, there’s no better way than to use something that you know already works!
If you do choose to repurpose something, it’s an excellent idea to tweak it in a way that adds in some actionable steps if it doesn’t have those already. People love to feel like they’ve accomplished things, and they love to make progress on their business! If you can help them with both of those things, you’ll earn a lot of their respect and trust.
That said, the more great, fresh content you have, the better. If you’re going to make content for your opt in from scratch, there are lots of options.
PDF CHECKLIST: An opt in can be something as simple as a PDF checklist that helps people learn about some part of their business
COSMO-STYLE QUIZ: or something as involved as a quiz (we personally LOVE Interact!) that you created using a third party app and embedded on your site.
MICRO COURSE: You could create a micro course to use specifically as an opt in. People will understand and appreciate the value that you give them. If you offer as an opt in something that people would normally have to pay $20 for, they’ll know that you think it’s really important to provide value to them first and foremost.
WORKBOOKS: You can also offer a workbook, where people can work through a series of questions and prompts to learn something about themselves or their business, and hopefully cross some things off of their to-do list.
Quizzes are great because they always pique someone’s curiosity.
Who seriously didn’t love a good Cosmo quiz??
Quizzes are an opportunity for people who opt in to learn something about themselves or their business or their brand or some aspect of their strategy, and they’re a great way for you to offer them content that’s specifically tailored to their quiz results.
Someone takes the quiz, you guide them through to the answers that suit them best, and then you provide them with a workbook or some stock photos, or some branding tips that will help them act on the results that they received from the quiz.
Quizzes also provide instant gratification, in that they only take a few minutes for someone to get through and then receive their results almost instantaneously.
